There are different kinds of points , since the term is used to denominate concepts of several fields. This time we are interested in focusing on the point as sign which allows to mark the end of a sentence.

Within this context, it is also possible to distinguish between more than one type of point. He point and followed appears when it is intended to separate statements that are included within the same paragraph. He new paragraph instead set the end of paragraph .

What makes the point and apart, therefore, is to separate paragraphs . After one of these punctuation marks, you must change line (unlike the period and followed) and start a new paragraph, capitalizing the first word of the sentence that will open the paragraph.

The point and apart allows to develop different ideas within the same logic or the same structure. It does not imply a radical change of theme , but it does make a difference regarding the reasoning that was being followed.

In the following example we can see how the point works apart:

“The first part of the game was very even. Spain managed to generate danger through the mobility of its strikers, but Italy matched the actions with shots from outside the area .

In the second half, the game took a turn and the Spanish team managed to impose their dominance. So he could score all three, twenty and forty minutes, to close the match with a score of three to zero. ”

As you can see, in the example there is a period after the word "area", which sets the end of the first paragraph. Both paragraphs refer to the same match of soccer , but the point and apart allows to separate the description of each of the times.

It is important to note that there is not always a single appropriate punctuation mark; depending on the case, the author may opt for a separate point or one followed, for example, to generate a small pause before continuing to develop the topic or to avoid such a cut and maintain the tension that has been creating since the beginning of the paragraph . Leaving aside the situations in which the rules of the language are violated and a misunderstanding is generated, it is a decision subjective from each person.

Similarly, when the central idea requires several pages for its treatment, it is not advisable to use a single paragraph, since it returns the reading very difficult and tedious; on the contrary, the separation in paragraphs through the point and apart is ideal to treat in each one a different aspect of the subject, or to cover different points of view, for example.

As is known, the grammar used when composing an email or any instant messaging service does not look much like the traditional one. With respect to the point and apart specifically, the current trend is to use it to avoid the formation of long paragraphs , regardless of the structuring of the themes (since we are in an era characterized by the lack of patience and dedication, an extensive text is unattractive).

In everyday speech it is possible to say "point and apart" to stop talking about one topic and move on to the next one, either because it bothers us or because we have no more weather to continue in the same conversation. Let's look at some examples of this expression: "We cannot continue with this, point and other", "You must look forward; it has left you, point and part", "If we do not make a point and apart the situation will become unsustainable".
